In the turmoil that has followed the 1991 demise of the Soviet Union, Russian librarians have gained unprecedented freedom and have been beset by daunting financial and organizational crises as well. These realities were repeatedly cited during a June 18-22 conference on "Libraries and Reading in Times of Cultural Change" in picturesque Vologda, an overnight train ride north from Moscow. This meeting gave a group of American, Russian, British, and French librarians, scholars, and administrators a chance to exchange ideas and some interesting research results.

Fitch Ratings has today assigned the Russian Vologda region Long-term foreign and local currency 'BB' ratings and a Short-term foreign currency 'B' rating. Fitch also assigned the Vologda region a National Long-term 'AA-(AA minus)(rus)' rating. The Outlooks for the Long-term ratings are Stable.

(UPM, Helsinki,December 19 , 2007, at 08.30 am) - Finnish forest industry group UPM and Russian Sveza Group have signed a letter of intent to form a joint venture company, and to make a final investment decision after finalising the feasibility study on a state-of-the-art forest industry facility in the Vologda region of Northwest Russia. Each party would hold 50 percent of the joint venture's share capital.

Fiat is forming a joint venture with Russia's Severstal Auto to build and sell Fiat brand cars and commercial vehicles in Russia.
Production of Fiat vehicles under the 50-50 joint venture is to begin in the first quarter of 2008, Fiat Group Automobiles SpA said Tuesday in announcing a signed letter of intent.
