The VOICES (Vologda Independent Cinema from European Screens) Festival will hold its first edition in Vologda from July 4th to 9th.
For the first time in Vologda and probably for the first time in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg, a film festival will gather European cinema lovers and will take an investigative look at young directors and their latest creations.

MOSCOW, March 4 (Reuters) - Severstal, Russia's largest steel producer, said on Thursday it acquired the remaining 20.2 percent of Italy's Lucchini SpA from the Lucchini family in order to take full control of the company.

Editor's note: In late November, Juneau writer Allan Engstrom and Vladimir Kolychev, the president of the Moscow Historical Society of Russian America, set off in search of the roots of Alexander Baranov, who was chief manager of the Russian American Co. from 1790 to 1818. Their trip took them to Kargopol, Russia, Baranov's birthplace (see "In Search of Baranov" article in the Dec. 8, issue of the Juneau Empire). The pair completed their trip with a visit to Kolychev's hometown of Totma, which also has connections with Alaska's past.
