First large-scale industrial production of large-format CLT panels in Russia has started in Sokol, Vologda Region.

26.02.2021 10:49

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a large-scale, prefabricated, solid engineered wood panel. Lightweight yet very strong, with superior acoustic, fire, seismic, and thermal performance, CLT is also fast and easy to install, generating almost no waste onsite. CLT offers design flexibility and low environmental impacts.

A CLT panel is an engineered-wood product made from gluing together layers of solid-sawn lumber, i.e., lumber cut from a single log. Each layer of boards is usually oriented perpendicular to adjacent layers and glued on the wide faces of each board, usually in a symmetric way so that the outer layers have the same orientation. CLT panels consist of an odd number of layers (usually, three to seven,) and may be sanded or prefinished before shipping.

Segezha Group of Forest Industry Companies acquired a full range of equipment for future CLT production site in the Vologda Region. Sokol CLT, the new asset of Segezha Group, is located on the industrial site of Sokol Wood Processing Plant, the leading Russian producer of construction and glulam beams for wooden construction. The capacity of Sokol CLT will reach 50,000 cubic meters of ready products per year. The plant will work in two shifts.

Segezha Group produced its first CLT panel measuring 3 by 6 meters at its new Sokol CLT plant in November 2020. The panels produced by the new plant can be up to 16 meters long, 3.5 meters wide and 0.4 meters thick. The popularity of the new building material is growing rapidly worldwide.

CLT panels are being actively used abroad for construction of multi-storied buildings and individual wooden houses. CLT panels are in high demand in Scandinavia and Europe. All in all, Europe accounts for more than 50% of the global CLT panel market. In Russia, the demand for CLT panels is still being formed. Demand for the new construction material is growing rapidly worldwide.

From January 2021 the plant has been put into commercial operation and has start serial production of products. It has created 50 new working places. The volume of investments in the new production is more than 3 billion rubles. With the launch of the new equipment we will definitely see CLT houses in Russia.
