Ded Moroz, the Russian Santa and his helper, Snegurochka don't make their home at the North Pole but in the Russian town of Veliky Ustyug. The closest large city to Veliky Ustyug is Vologda, almost 500 km away, but Ded Moroz's home used to be a thriving northern military outpost, and its remoteness has enabled it to maintain its old-world feel.

RÜTGERS Holding Germany GmbH and OAO Severstal are establishing the Severtar joint venture to set up a coal tar processing facility at Severstal headquarters in Cherepovets. Alexander Grubman, General Director of the Severstal Russian Steel Division, and Henri Steinmetz, President and CEO of the RÜTGERS Group, signed an agreement to this effect in Moscow on Friday, September 23, 2011.

OAO Severstal, one of the world’s leading steel and steel-related mining companies, has been ranked the most environmentally friendly Russian metals and mining company in a report by Interfax-ERA, the ecology and energy rating agency. In Interfax-ERA’s report, which rates the environmental and energy efficiency performance of 4,000 of Russia’s leading businesses across all industries over a six-year period between 2005 and 2012, ranked Severstal 36th overall, ahead of peers such as Evraz Group (117th), OAO MMK (130th), OAO UPMK (141st), and OAO Mechel (142nd).

The key figure of the Russian New Year is certainly Ded Moroz (Father Frost, or Grandfather Frost, to be more exact) who arrives wearing a red caftan (old-style long garment) decorated with traditional embroidering and edged with snow-white fluff, a red cap, white mittens and felt boots. Boasting a luxuriant snow-white beard, ruddy nose and cheeks, and a cordial smile, he is leaning on an icy staff with a sparkling star on its top and carrying a huge red sack with presents for kids.

This is indeed a much-awaited event for all PhosAgro employees, for all Cherepovets residents, and for the entire region, as the company has made significant investments. The facility is state-of-the-art, and its products are in high demand. These products are actively used in Russia and exported. Given the conditions of the growing food market, nitrogen fertilisers will hopefully be in great demand and natural gas chemistry production will grow in the Vologda Region.
