Father Frost - the favourite character of all people in Russia - is receiving his birthday congratulations. Nobody knows though what his real age is but there's reason to believe that he is about 2,000 years of age. Several years ago Russian children proposed to celebrate Father Frost's birthday on November 18th.

VOLOGDA - Last weekend's posh celebrations to mark Moscow's 864th birthday left no doubt where Russia's capital is located. But 460 kilometers away, another city also recently celebrated 864 years - and its residents remembered that instead of St. Basil's Cathedral and Red Square, the trademarks of Russia's capital could have been a tub of butter and a wooden house with a carved fence.

Among the numerous historic towns of the Vologda territory, Ustiuzhna is perhaps the least known.
Located on the Mologa River, a tributary of the Volga, in the southwest corner of Vologda Region, the town is often confused with Velikii Ustiug, which is situated almost 700 km distant in the northeast corner of the province.

First mentioned in the Primary Chronicle in 862, Belozersk was an important point for those moving from central Russia northward
The origins and early location of Belozersk, a town of some 10,000 souls in the Vologda region, are dim and uncertain, but "Beloozero" is considered among the oldest recorded settlements among the eastern Slavs, mentioned in the Primary Chronicle under the year 862 as one of the five towns granted to the Varangian (or Viking) brothers Riurik, Sineus and Truvor who, according to the Chronicle, were invited to rule over the eastern Slavs in what was then called Rus'.
